The Chlamydia FAQ

June 8, 2013 By Andy Ramirez Leave a Comment

What is chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease. It is caused by the bacteria chlamydia trachomatis.

Is Chlamydia Considered A Common Sexually Transmitted Disease?

Yes, this is a fairly common sexually transmitted disease although the infection rate might not be as high as other STDs. There are roughly 2.8 million people in the United States that become infected with chlamydia each and every year.

Such figures are alarming since safe sex practices would reduce the number immensely.

Who Is Most At Risk For Chlamydia?

Sexually active persons with multiple partners that do not practice safe sex will find themselves at risk for chlamydia.

Why Is Chlamydia Commonly Referred To As The Silent STD?

The reason is that the symptoms associated with chlamydia do not always manifest quickly if at all. Therefore, a person may carry the disease and not know it. This might make it a silent STD but not a harmless one.

A person carrying the disease unknowingly might have sex with others and then spread the disease.

Is It True That Chlamydia Never Shows Any Signs Of Symptoms?

No, there are very clear and definitive signs of chlamydia that can manifest. They might not manifest with everyone and the degree of severity of the symptoms might vary from person to person. However, there does exist the potential that extreme and painful.

Generally, 50% of men will show no symptoms and 75% of women will not show any symptoms. This, in turn, means 50% of men do show symptoms as do 25% of women.

How Long Can It Take For Those With Symptoms To Actually Experience Them?

Symptoms might show up within one to three weeks of the initial infection.

What Are The Common Visible Symptoms Of Chlamydia?

Men that suffer from this condition will experience a severe burning and itching sensation in the penis. This can also come with a discharge from the penis. When urinating, there can be a burning sensation experienced. Men might feel pain in the testicles as well.

Similarly, women will experience a burning sensation and discharge from the vagina. The initial infection of this STD in women will impact the cervix and the urethra. However, if this problem is not treated in time, the infection will spread to the fallopian tube and the uterus.

Men and women that engage in anal sex may experience discharge from the rectum along with pain and bleeding.

What Can Happen If Women Experience The Continual Spreading Of The Infection?

Women might very well suffer from a number of additional serious problems. A woman might become infertile if the condition is not treated quickly as the bacteria can greatly cause havoc in the body.

Can Men Face Serious Adverse Health Reactions When Chlamydia Is Not Treated?

Yes, men can become sterile if the bacteria from the disease enters the tube that carries sperm into the testis.

Does Chlamydia Present Further Risks To Pregnant Women?

Yes, when this STD is not treated in time, a pregnant woman that suffers from chlamydia may go into premature labor. A baby that is born might show the signs of chlamydia in their eyes and/or respiratory tract. It can even cause pneumonia in newborns.

How Is Chlamydia Diagnosed?

A person that shows the signs of the disease may visit the doctor and the doctor will have laboratory tests performed. These tests will reveal whether or not the disease is present in the person’s system.

How Can A Diagnosis Be Made When You Do Not Show Any Signs Of Chlamydia Symptoms?

The way this can be achieved would be through undergoing an annual comprehensive sexually transmitted disease test. A series of blood tests can be performed to search for the presence of chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases.

For some, tests of this nature might reveal not only the presence of chlamydia, but the tests could also detect other STDs a person may be suffering from.

Can Chlamydia Be Treated?

Yes, a doctor can prescribe oral antibiotic pills to treat the disease. Often, oral antibiotics can make chlamydia completely go away within one week. For very severe forms of chlamydia, IV treatments may be required.

Such instances would be the case when women have reached a high stage of infection.
